Writing the Political Poem: a 2-day Workshop w/ Ariel Yelen
at The Record Shop (360 Van Brunt St)
How to write the “political poem”? What are the stakes of the poem/poet? What does it mean to write poetry that speaks to the present moment?
In this poetry workshop, a continuation of a similar workshop co-taught with the poet Tracy Fuad this past summer, we’ll create writing that is urgent and takes risks. We’ll discuss strategies for how to write the “political poem,” guided by the work of Etel Adnan, Diane Di Prima, Marwa Helal, Juliana Spahr, Nikki Giovanni, Harryette Mullen, Mosab Abu Toha, Bernadette Mayer, Sarah Schulman, Brandon Shimoda, Ted Rees, Mohammed Zenia Siddiq Yusef Ibrahim, and others.
Class time will be divided into closer readings of poems and poetic texts and active writing with generative prompts.
The workshop will take place over the course of two Saturdays at the Record Shop in Red Hook.
